Stephanie Billings - Fitness Model /IFBB Professional Figure Athlete/

Name: Stephanie Billings

Birthday: September 2,1987
Where: Louisville, Kentucky
Height: 5'7" /170 cm/
Weight: 140 lbs /64 kg/
Favorite Bodypart: Quads

E-mail: sab9282@hotmail.com
Website: http://www.stephaniebillings.com
Biography: With the dream of becoming an IFBB Professional Figure Athlete , I stepped on stage for the first time in 2007. Little did I know that three competitive seasons and ten shows later, my dream would become reality.
Growing up, I was raised in a football centered home, my dad and both my older and younger brother. Playing sports and lifting weights was a staple in our lives.
I could not wait until I was old enough to workout at the YMCA with the rest of my family. We have photos of us flexing our arms and now, as adults, we still flex for one another! As an active family we not only lifted heavy, but they also ate heavy! All my life I have struggled with my weight and body image. These issued have plagued me my entire life... even at the age of 5 on the t-ball field; I had to make sure I had a bow in my hair! Growing up I played baseball, basketball and anything that would contain my competitive spirit (and showing that I was just as tough as my two brothers!), however, it was cheerleading that stuck with me from third grade until I graduated high school. This too added to my lack of confidence since I was not the 'typical size' of a cheerleader. Although beneficial for my current endeavors, my broad shoulders and long legs were not conducive to cheering in college, and no matter how hard I worked and no matter what titles I received, a 5'7" cheerleader is not on the top of a recruiter's list. So I hung up my pom poms and conformed to the "college" lifestyle. Processed food, alcohol and lack of exercise followed suit and the inevitable happened, I had become a societal stereotype.

In January of 2005, I saw myself in a music video, put together by one of my former college classmates, and was completely faced with a true picture of my physical self: 180-pounds and 30 percent body fat. The person I saw on the screen could not possibly be me! It was at that moment I knew it was time for a complete lifestyle change; I bought a treadmill, a dry erase board, diet log and got to work. At that time, I knew little about diet and exercise but enough to know I had to burn more then I consumed in order to start losing weight. I immediately started educating myself about nutrition and what it would take to maintain muscle, while burning fat. Eight months later I had lost over forty pounds through hard work, a healthier diet and a new outlook on life.

Later that fall, I went to a body building competition to watch one of my friends compete. As the girls lined up on stage something clicked! This was what I wanted to do! At that moment I had an epiphany. I saw myself on stage, in the jeweled suit and clear 4-inch heels, reveling in the stage lights and listening to the onlooker's cheers. Plans were immediately put into action to step on stage. Four months later at my first show my life changed forever, I became a figure competitor.

It was immediately after my first show that I knew I had found my niche. Determined to obtain professional status, I competed at the 2009 Team Universe. This was my third national show, and tenth show competing. Leading up to the show, everything felt perfect and show day, everything fell completely into place. My dream came true and I left the stage a new IFBB pro.

10 fitness and nutrition mistakes made by women written by Anthony Lee

Want greater fitness success? Stop making these 10 mistakes – these misconceptions seem more common among women and are perpetuated by media, fads, etc. These mistakes are hard to shake. Below is my response.

While I initially specialized in fitness and nutrition for men, a growing number of female friends, acquaintances, and potential clients have been soliciting my advice and services. Given women’s markedly different fitness needs and goals, I began to incorporate my knowledge of nutrition and exercise to build regimens and routines for the fairer sex.
Through casual conversations and comprehensive discussions with women, I have found that the same misconceptions are reiterated by fitness novices and experts alike.
While these misconceptions surely exist among men, they seem more common among women. Perpetuated by the media, fads, and fashion magazines that carelessly dispense fitness advice, these mistakes are almost ingrained and therefore hard to shake. Below is my response.

1. I need to lose weight
When speaking about fitness and nutrition, this is the most common phrase uttered by women. While it is true that many overweight individuals (both men and women alike) need to lose drastic amounts of weight for health reasons, many who utter this phrase want to lose body fat, not weight. What’s the difference?
If weight goes down, doesn’t body fat follow? Not necessarily. For many, an exercise regimen that includes cardiovascular and resistance training increases muscle while eliminating body fat.

The overall effect is a tighter, more toned physique, but body weight could stay the same or even increase. Therefore, the obsession with numbers on a scale is unfounded; one can greatly improve appearance, enhance fitness levels, and eliminate unwanted fat all while maintaining a constant weight. Focus instead on a combination of body fat measurements in trouble spots and the image in the mirror.

2. I just gained two pounds!
Again, the numbers on the scale are of little importance in the short run. I hear too many women expressing genuine concern over a fluctuation of two or three pounds in bodyweight.
There are so many factors, none of which have to do with “getting fatter,” that could have caused such a minor gain, so there is no need for panic.
For example, an individual should weigh him/herself at the same time every day because the difference in weight between stepping on the scale first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and stepping on the scale after dinner can be quite noticeable. This difference, however, is normal and cyclical.
Water weight can also be a culprit of minor differences, and this too has nothing to do with a permanent weight gain. Therefore, the scale should only be consulted about once a week and the long-run changes are what matter.

3. Im going on the ___diet.
To many women, the word diet implies two things that are notorious saboteurs: deprivation and an end-date. Whether it’s the grapefruit diet, Atkins, or some other fad diet in the latest fashion magazine (that’s why they’re fashion magazines, not health magazines), diets require deprivation. They force the follower to give up enjoyable foods, endure intense hunger or some combination of the two, which usually leads to intense cravings and even more intense binges.
A second thing that diets imply is an end date, a day when the h#llish deprivation comes to an abrupt end. So after that spring break trip, high school reunion, or wedding day, many women gain back even more weight/fat than they originally carried. This is because they feel entitled to finally eat the foods they love after a prolonged diet, and a week of carefree eating somehow turns into a month, then a year.
The way to avoid these pitfalls is to develop healthy eating habits instead of relying on crash diets. Eat nutrient-dense foods in small, frequent meals to stay satisfied and embrace portion control so that you can enjoy the foods that you love.
Exercise moderately, incorporating fun and variety to workouts to avoid burnout and boredom. Health and fitness should be lifelong goals, not 4-week tours de force.

4. Ill be on the elliptical if you need me
The idea behind some people’s religious devotion to the elliptical machine lies in the belief that since cardiovascular exercise effectively burns body fat, any form of cardio will suffice.
First of all, a nutrient-dense diet combined with both cardiovascular and resistance training is shown to trump diet and cardio alone, but that is not even my main gripe.
Research has consistently shown that the elliptical, although easiest on joints, is worse than the treadmill, stationary bicycle, and rowing machine (not to mention activities such as swimming and intense hiking) when it comes to elevating heart rate and burning body fat. This is due to the fact that movement on these machines relies heavily on momentum and not resistance or the propelling of one’s bodyweight. All these months of elliptical training has yielded mediocre results, and now you know why.

5. Im going to give diet pills a try
Do you know what Yohimbe is and how its affects the body? Do you know why there was so much concern around Ephedra? Do you consume too much caffeine? If you are not intimately familiar with these substances, why would you put them in your body day after day?
Before taking these pills, an individual should consult a physician to assure that he/she is in good health. Diet pills achieve fat reduction and weight loss by stimulating the body’s systems (thereby increasing metabolism), which can put extra strain on vital functions and organs such as the heart.
Also, diet pills are just a tool; effort is still required to make every tool perform. Just because you pop a capsule a few times a day doesn’t mean that you can eat junk, skip workouts, and achieve that ideal physique.
In short, diet pills should be employed after starting and maintaining a regimen as that last resort to break through a plateau. They can be very dangerous if used improperly or abused or use caution.

6. Ill have the salad, please
Salads can be a great source of nutrients while being low in saturated fat and simple carbohydrates. The key word is “can.” Too many times I see individuals pass up perfectly healthy sandwiches and entrees, opting instead for a salad drenched in dressing, bacon bits, and croutons. These items, loaded with fat and calories while scant on nutrients, will not only sabotage a diet but will often fail to make you full.
In order to construct a truly healthy salad, focus on nutrient-dense, low-calorie items such as spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, etc and mix in some lean proteins, beans, nuts, and low fat cheeses for flavor and texture.
The best feature of salads is the variety that can be created, so keep things interesting and flavorful. If you prefer the mixture of dressing, bacon bits, and croutons with some greens mixed in, you might as well have some pizza or burgers to at least fill you up. As you can see, not all salads are created equal.

7. I try to skip breakpast.
Study after study confirms that individuals who eat a balanced breakfast complete with carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats lose more weight than those who skip this meal. Why?
After a night of fasting and inactivity (aka sleep), an individual’s metabolism is slowed to a crawl. Think of breakfast as the spark that ignites up your body’s metabolic fire, setting you up to burn calories for the entire day. More importantly, though, a nutrient-dense, satisfying breakfast prevents overeating later in the day.
While it is true that skipping breakfast equates to zero calories for that meal, it sets you up to consume many more calories throughout the day, when food choices probably aren’t the healthiest.
So if your goal is to shed body fat or lose unwanted weight, eat within 45 minutes of waking up. Breakfast can be as simple as a low-fat yogurt with a piece of fruit, so the “I don’t have time for breakfast” excuse won’t work.

8. I do pushups to get rid of my batwings.
Some swear by pushups to rid themselves of that unwanted flab around the triceps, others are devotees of crunches to expunge belly fat, while still others try lunging their way to less cellulite on the backside.
Whatever the exercise and whatever the body part, this approach is called “spot reduction,” whereby an isolation exercise is performed to tone a specific area. It simply doesn’t exist.
You cannot reduce body fat in one spot. While isolation exercises will undoubtedly strengthen the target muscles, the fat surrounding these muscles (and the fat everywhere else on the body) can only be reduced by consistently being in a hypocaloric state (burning more calories than consumed).
This is why anyone with a six pack will tell you that crunches are not the key. So it does not matter if the goal is tighter arms, a small waistline, or a toned backside; decreasing consumption and increasing cardiovascular activity are the paths to success.

9. I dont lift weigths. Lifting will make me bulky.
An overwhelming number of women avoid the weight rooms of local gyms and health clubs because they firmly believe that resistance training, whether it is free weights or machine-assisted weights, will result in an undesirably bulky physique.
This misconception stems from the fact that nearly all men achieve noticeable gains in muscle mass after beginning a weight training regimen. Because it stems from personal observation and is partially true, it is quite difficult to combat.
Yes, regular weight training will result in increased muscle mass. However, there is a certain type of training necessary to achieve these gains in size, training that involves heavy resistance and volume. By keeping the weight at about 40 to 50% of maximum effort and increasing repetitions for a cardiovascular effect, you will notice tone, not bulk.

10. Its reduced-fat. I can eat as much as I want.
There are two pieces of information I would like to convey here. “Reduced fat” is a relative term and just because an item is labeled such does not mean that it is low in calories.
For example, if one serving of a certain food contains 60% of the daily recommended fat intake, reducing that amount to 30% is considered “reduced fat,” and will probably even be marketed as “half the fat of the original!”
However, 30% is still a lot of fat for one serving, so considered absolute values like how many grams of fat, carbohydrates, protein, etc. are consumed instead of relative values like “50% less fat.” Additionally, reaching fitness goals is largely about calorie intake. More body fat and unwanted weight will be gained by eating 500 calories of a low-fat item than by eating 100 calories of a high-fat item, so keep this in mind.
If there is a loss of control or guilt when eating diet or low-fat items, it is probably better in the long-run to consume the higher-fat, higher-calorie counterparts in moderation.

What is Fitness?

"Physical Fitness" Microsoft Encarta Reference Library 2004:
“the ability of the human body to function with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to engage in leisure activities, and to meet physical stresses.”
Fitness is not about being thin, having a small waist, or having bulging muscles. It is a combination of qualities that enable us to be at our full potential in performing vigorous physical activities. Physical Fitness involves the performance of the heart, lungs, and the muscles of the body. Specifically, it takes into account our Cardio Respiratory Endurance, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, and Flexibility. To some extent, Fitness also influences our mental and emotional development since what we do with our bodies also affects what we can do with our minds.
Although Physical Fitness and good health influences each other, they are not the same. Healthy people could be physically unfit due to lack of exercise. On the other hand, Physically Fit people perform their everyday tasks effortlessly.

5 Components of Personal Fitness

When you look at Fitness, you need to remember that it's more than just exercising. Neither is it just about your Weight Control, strength, endurance, Fat and Calorie Content. Fitness is a combination of all of these, and more. To easily understand Physical Fitness, you should look into its parts. But to achieve fitness or your Fitness Goals, you need to balance all its components. The following has been generally agreed to be the 5 components of fitness:
1. Cardiorespiratory endurance
This is the body's ability, over sustained periods of physical activity, to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues, and to remove wastes. To measure this Fitness Component, you can step on and off a 10- to 12-inch-high step and then take your heart rate after three to five minutes. You can also do long Runs and Swims to assess your cardiorespiratory endurance.

2. Muscular endurance

This is the ability of a muscle, or a group of muscles, to sustain repeated contractions or to continue applying force against a fixed object. For a fitness assessment of your muscular endurance, you can do push-ups on your fitness mats. The more push-ups you can do, the fitter you are.
3. Muscular strength
This is the muscle's ability to exert force for a brief span of time. You can measure physical fitness components, like this, by lifting weights.

4. Flexibility
This is the ability to move joints and use muscles through their full range of motion. This should be performed before and after each workout. By performing a simple motion and observing how far you can go, you can assess the flexibility of each part of your body. The sit-and-reach test is a good measure of flexibility of the Lower Back and Backs of the Upper Legs.

5. Body composition
This Fitness Component is the ratio of lean body mass to fat. Lean body mass represents the weight of water, muscle, bone and internal organs. Body fat represents the remaining fat tissue and is expressed as a percentage of total body weight. Because muscle weighs more than fat, it is important to measure your body composition rather than your body weight when you Evaluate Your Fitness Level. Body composition can be measured through the Body Mass Index or BMI. If you are using body composition to measure your fitness goals, it is important that you use the same body fat measurement technique.

6. Paragon Sports
As written in all fitness books, getting into Stretching and Resistance Exercises will improve and enhance your cardio respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility to various extents. Those are the components of physical fitness.

Setting Your Fitness Goals

Becoming and staying Physically Fit requires the setting of specific Fitness Goals. You have to be realistic in setting your Fitness Goals and make them achievable. Don't even think you'll look like Cindy Crawford or Arnold Schwarzenegger within a few weeks. You will just end up frustrated if all you concentrate on is the number on a scale or being the clone of some movie star. Instead of dreaming about the unachievable body, think about developing and improving the body you have. The following will help you to Set your Fitness Goals:
  • Break down your Fitness Goals. You will probably do better if you break down your Fitness Goals into short-, medium-, and long-term fitness goals. You might select a race distance of 5 kilometers as your long-term Fitness Goal. To prepare for the race, you could set a short-term goal of walking /jogging 2 kilometers around a local track without stopping. As you progress you could opt for 3 kilometers on the track or on the road as your medium-term goal. Later, you can begin aiming at 4 kilometers or more to train for that 5-kilometer run. Setting Your Fitness Goals
  • Motivate yourself. Common motivations are: to have a long, healthy life; to Be Physically Fit; to look better; to be thin or lean; to improve one's love life; to take up a sport; and to eliminate serious health concerns. But regardless of what motivation you have, you need to make your program a part of your routine, gear up, proceed, and be committed to your Fitness Goals.
  • Rest but stay Focused. Even with the strongest resolve, we all find the same excuses whenever we fail to follow our Fitness Program: "I'm too tired", "I will make up for it later or tomorrow", and "I didn't have time". But, if you constantly use these excuses during the short term, it would be difficult for you to achieve your long term Fitness Goals. It is ok to give in to occasional attacks of fatigue or laziness; No matter how devoted you are, you can expect it to happen. But remember that most of what you do has a positive or negative consequence for you, and to some level, Being Physically Fit is about balancing the two.
  • Build up Your Resolve. As you proceed toward your Fitness Goals, keep your motivation in mind so you'll be able to stick to your decision to Be Fit. The first steps on the path to a healthier life are the most difficult. Next steps become easier as your Fitness Program becomes a regular part of your routine. However, it is easier to stay on track with your Fitness Goal if you have the support of the people around you: your friends, family and work colleagues. There's a greater chance of reaching your Fitness Goal if you can enlist the support of at least one person who understands what you are doing. Keep in mind though for whom the Fitness Program is - YOU!
  • Reward yourself. After your hard work, don't forget to reward yourself for achieving a goal. There is nothing more motivating than having two rewards - attaining your Fitness Goals, and treating yourself to a desirable but suitable reward such as a massage at a local spa, or a new outfit or a sporting-goods item.
After you've Set your realistic and achievable Fitness Goals, you can then Choose a Fitness Method or workout routine that will fit your lifestyle and your body's needs.

Mindi O'Brien Retires from Fitness

Fitness lost one of its top competitors today, as Mindi O'Brien announced via Youtube today that she is retiring from fitness competition. It sucks to leave a sport or anything you love for so long due to an injury. She's had a great career spanning 14 years, with great routines and what some people call one of the best physiques in fitness history, capped off by her trademark arms that would give any female bodybuilder a run for their money. Some of her highlights include competing in 6 straight Fitness Olympias (although she was qualified for 7, but skipped out of this year's show due to injury) and 5 straight Arnold Classics. She would finish her career at the first-ever Arnold Classic Europe, placing 6th.

Here's a video of Mindi during her trip to Spain (including her fitness routine and posing round) and announcing her retirement from fitness:

What does the future hold for her? We're unsure, but we think she will stick around in the fitness industry in some form or capacity. We over at Save Women's Fitness Now congratulate Mindi on an incredible journey, and we wish her the best of luck in the next chapter of her life!

NPC Fitness Spotlight for October 2011: Amanda Hatfield

This month's NPC Fitness Spotlight belongs to someon who has returned to the scene after being away from the fitness scene since 2004, Amanda Hatfield!

Looking at the picture above, some of you think you might have seen her before. If you were following this sport around 2004-2005, chances are you have. She used to go by the name Amanda Swallow. She was ALL OVER the paysites with her explosive biceps and overall muscularity. She was doing exceptionally well during her first run, then out of nowhere, she disappered, not to be seen until now.

With a new name in Amanda Hatfield, she didn't waste any time in making a name for herself in the fitness division. In her first show back from a five-year hiatus, she won first place at the NPC Julie Palmer Ultimate Showdown this past June in Toledo, Ohio and qualifying to compete in Fitness Nationals at Team Universe, where she claimed fifth in the short class. She recently competed in the North Americans, where she won her class and ALMOST won her pro card that night as well. She did more than just win her class at the NAs, she she restored her status as one of the division’s top contenders, and she's currently on Kriv Studios and HDPhysiques, with her biceps as impressive as ever. Expect more sites to feature her and quite possibly a pro card in the VERY near future. I think I can speak for everyone when I say...WELCOME BACK AMANDA!!!

IFBB Fitness Spotlight for October 2011: Kayde Puckett

This month's IFBB Fitness Spotlight belongs to one of the newer competitors in IFBB, Kayde Puckett!

Kayde is from Northern Virginia, now residing in North Carolina! While her parents wanted her to do dancing and piano, she wanted to do martial arts when she was little. Her parents decided to let her do martial arts, and from there was the beginning of what would be the start of a great fitness career ahead of her. It was during her martial arts days that led her to discover weight training. She began to pick up weights at age 14 ana hasn't looked back since. That and her martial arts training (which she continued through college) paved the way for her to become a fitness competitor.

When she moved to Raleigh, I was unable to find a martial arts school that would fit her needs. It turned out to be a blessing in disquise as she focues more on weight training anf found fitness in the process. When she saw her first fitness show, she was instantly hooked. She began to train for fitness in April 2008, and a year after that, at the NPC Team Universe in 2009, she won the overall fitness title and her pro card, and she's now an IFBB Pro.

Kayde will be making history this month as she will participate in the first-ever Arnold Classic Europe. With her successful track record, the sky's the limit for what she can accomplish in the IFBB fitness division.
